Miner’s Kit Design
2019 - 2020

Through text and images the design and considerations of Miner 75 is detailed as follows.  Special thanks to Colter Wehmeier for design consultation.

As the Burea of Intangible Resources (BIR) built up their facilties at the Zone, they needed to increase their workforce.  The protagonist, Miner 75, was introduced to the site during the 1927 hiring fair.  He quickly joined ranks and found himself working as a Joiner in one of the facility buildings and as time passed he found himself in a variety of positions at the Zone.  The BIR had learned that the act of human perception allows some amount of control over how the resource renders/corrupts. They hired skilled technicians to train their mind to conform isolated chunks of resource into useful new tools, typically next generation warfare devices.  In addition to the warefare devices they have also crafted tools that are used in the extraction and refinement processes, a modularized backpack and badge, badge charging device, tool corruption resistance generators, and custom kit storage containers.  As an individual sets out for their work each day the BIR ensures they are properly protected against the Zone’s corruption.

The design of the various Miner kits elements was drawn from the modularized design of the Autonomous Mining Cart.  As this idea developed it became apparent that each node of the backpack would be swappable just like the Cart.  The Backpack contains a resistance antenna, resistance beacon, wireless electricity, and power converter modules.  Each of these modules are then catalogued with an ID number and itemized on the custom plate affixed to each piece of equipment.  The same is true for the Miner’s Kit storage container, which is how the badge and badge charger and miner’s tools are delivered.  The Badge is also modularized and features contacts for charging and allows for titles to be swapped out as your job changes at the zone. Additionally, included in the Kit was various Manuals for the tools’ usage.  The design of these manuals was excessively dense to imply and lean into the obsessive nature of the BIR, imagine a 300 page manual for the use of a standard shovel or trowel.  Each piece of equipment is affixed with warning labels and an itemized catalog label, which were all custom designed for the film.

Degaussing is a technique often used for the elimination of a magnetic field.  This degausing process is used as a grounding reference for the Resource Corruption Resistance at the zone.  Additionally the tesla coil serves as a tangible example for the transmission of wireless electricity for this psuedo-deguasing process.  These tesla coils are found in nearly every device the BIR uses at the Zone, including even the top of the barrier wall and buildings.  Additionally, breaker box diagrams helped to provide a reference for the itemized labels for each piece of BIR equipment.   The BIR’s obsessive control is expressed through the knolling of tools in the tool storage container.  And finally the Miner’s outerwear was heavily drawn from commercial fishing attire.
